Profile

Evan Hughes

Evan is a regular of the Melbourne swing-dancing scene, having started dancing in 2004. With a love of music at all tempos and a sensitivity to the subtleties of lead and follow, Evan is an accomplished dancer and is a constant presence on the social dance floor. He enjoys the opportunity dancing brings to meet a variety of weird and wonderful types that inevitably gravitate towards swing dancing.

Evan had his first competition win in the Open Jack & Jill at the 2007 Australian Jitterbug Championships, quickly followed by a hat trick of wins in the Slow and Smooth, Strictly Lindy, and Fast Foot divisions at the Melbourne Swing Festival in early 2008. Since then, he has won titles in a variety dance styles, such as blues and balboa, and in each division of lindy hop, including a victory at the Australian Hellzapoppin Prize in 2009 after being runner up in 2008.

Evan is a founding member of the Melbourne troupe Echoes of Harlem, and is a past member of Bratpack and Scatpack. His own greatest critic, Evan is endlessly eager to be better and relishes the opportunities for improvement that teaching demands. Teaching, performing, and competing are essential parts of Evan's dancing world, as is anything that offers an avenue to further develop his dancing skills for the social floor.
