I absolutely LOVE dancing! I began as a tiny tot with fairy wings on my back and a pink tutu on my bottom. I progressed through ballet, character (winning the Victorian Theatrical Championship for dancing as a scarecrow to Michael Jackson), jazz and many leopard skin lycra clad school performances. My attention was then turned to the packed dance floors of nightclubs. There is nothing like the exhilaration of the music flowing through your body as you dance to your interpretation of it.
My other passion is travelling and from other corners of the world I tried; Laotian line dancing, Thai disco, Czech underground boogie, clapping Belgian, Berlin and UK techno, Turkish belly dancing and Spanish latin to name just a few of the weird and wonderful.
It was not until I returned home and found out about Swing dancing that I knew I had fallen in love though. Funnily enough it was through a predominantly male windsurfing camp that I met Kate who introduced me to the sounds of the 1940s and sparked my interest in this totally new type of dancing for me. One class and although I frustratingly didn't get a single step, I was hooked. To be back learning moves and styles, to share with a group of people but also a partner, my excitement, total enjoyment of "just dancing" was thrilling.
I have come to love many aspects of swing – there is nothing like a pure lindy swing out on a beautiful dancefloor with an amazing band behind you, the exhilaration of fast lindy, the thrill of a lift or slide or my passion for cheeky 20s Charleston! The music, history, fashions, people and the dance. There is something for everyone. I challenge everyone to give swing dancing a go, laugh, have fun and PLEASE always ask me for a dance.
