Learn To Dance In A Day – Solo Blues
Perfect for anyone who loves Blues music, regardless of dance experience, this workshop will help you have fun with the music, be confident and creative on the dance floor, and enhance your partner dancing.
Blues and jazz dance share many of the same roots, so this workshop is relevant to anyone with an interest in vernacular jazz.
Our experienced blues teacher will take you through the fundamentals of solo blues movement and technique, drawing inspiration from clips of vintage blues dancing. We’ll practice chaining moves together, and improvising your own combinations. Build up your confidence to dance solo blues socially or in jams!
WHEN & WHERE
Saturday 1 June
Venue: Ashtanga Yoga Centre – 110-112 Argyle St. Fitzroy VIC 3065
SCHEDULE AND CONTENT
1.30pm: Check in
1.45 – 3.00pm Session 1: Core solo blues movement and aesthetics
We’ll start from the basics! No experience necessary, this class is all about the core solo blues movements – drawing inspiration from old school clips of solo blues, we’ll learn what makes a snake boogie different from a mooche, why everything is an apple jack, and how giant robots can help you do a fishtail. If you’ve never done solo blues before, you’ll come away with a wide variety of new movements, and if you’re an old hand, we’ve got some fun new ways of thinking about improvising with your blues movements.
30 min break
3.30 – 4.45pm Session 2: Grounding, inspiration and social dancing
Ever been confused by what “use the floor” means? We’ll start off with clear exercises to connect your dancing with the floor (and opening a new way of improvising in your blues movement), giving your dancing that earthy grounded quality that’s such a big part of blues dancing. Then, we’ll work on drawing inspiration from the floor, the music, and the others around you to get everyone confidently social dancing solo blues! Whether you’re wanting to dance at a party, in a competition, or at home in your kitchen, we promise you’ll have increased confidence in your solo blues after this class!

WHAT TO EXPECT
Our Dance in a Day workshop will teach you some introductory moves and technique that will allow you to build your confidence and take your dancing to the social floor.
WHAT TO BRING
Comfortable shoes (most swing dancers don’t wear heels), water bottle, snacks, mints, deodorant, spare t-shirt, small towel, band aids – swing dancing is exercise, and you may well break a sweat, so be prepared.
No partner required
This is solo dancing, so we won’t be dancing with partners – but we’ll all be sharing the same fun learning experience, so you’ll meet some new people and learn some new moves.
